Repurposing & The Value of A Work Space

This is an old letterpress drawer that I have repurposed to hold my essential oils. I acquired it from a crafting person who liked to keep her rubber stamps in the compartments. By hanging it on the wall I have easy access to my oils where I use them most, in my all-purpose utility room that began as simply the home of my washer and dryer. I believe any Farm Wench or Beau worth their salt should have a room in which they can do work indoors when needed. I'm lucky to have such a space, complete with a deep sink and adjoining mud room. This is where I treat chickens in need, hang herbs to dry, and many other countless chores. My daughter uses the room to make her beautiful bouquets, and it's where we feed our dogs. The mud room offers a place to sit and pull off our soiled shoes, and the shelves surrounding it provide space for my Farm Wench Library and numerous cowboy and gardening hats. If you don't have a room like this, create one! Rearrange an existing room, or in a garage or shed. I sure love mine!

In the mudroom, I hang my coat, hat, and a sign stating the rule of my roost...."You Lay, You Stay!"

On a top shelf I store canning pots, hats and small baskets. This is also where I put my paper bags of drying herbs.

I hang larger baskets from the ceiling.
I hang often-used items in easy reach, including various brushes and tools I use almost daily. I highly recommend the nail brush on the far right. Nothing cleans the dirt under your nails better, and there is ALWAYS dirt under my nails.

This sink is deep, for washing big pots, clumsy items, and chickens! It even has a built-in scrub board for the extra dirty laundry.

Working With What's At Hand

I love what I call "usable antiques." The idea of giving life to an object that was once deemed essential, brings joy to my little Farm Wench heart. I don't always use these items, particularly when the latest gadget makes certain jobs easier. But it's nice to know that, should I lose electricity or experience some kind of natural disaster...I can still churn butter or grind coffee.

This is just a sampling of some of the antique tools I've kept over the years. The flour sifter was just too cute to resist. The other item in the back is a nut chopper...very handy and easy to use. Of course, the tool in front is a beater.

This is an old bottle carrier that my Auntie gave me. I've repurposed is as a spice rack for all the home-grown herbs I've dried.

This is my lovely coffee grinder. It really works!

And yes, I do have a butter churn! This is actually a counter-top model very popular in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. It's delicately named, a "Daisy Churn."
