Q: I just start my worm bin. When I add food scraps, should I mix it in with the worms or lay it on top?
A: I personally feel it is best to mix food scraps into the top of the soil, or at the very least push the carrot, potato, whatever into the top of the soil so it is easier for the worms to reach. I also mix in coffee grinds or, when appropriate, pulverized egg shells, so that they are well distributed amongst my red wigglers.
Q: I've been composting my kitchen scraps for 6 months. Should I stop adding new things at some point, and start a new bin while the original pile breaks down? How long do I need to wait before using the compost?
